Delayed gratification

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Are you curious?”. This is the slogan from a TV commercial that I remember from my childhood. Children are shown being given a “surprise egg”, a chocolate egg with a toy inside. They are also given the condition that they will get a second one if they don’t eat it until the adult returns. Spoiler: the children have eaten the chocolate.

It’s funny that I’m now encountering this psychological effect again 13 years later in the form of the concept of “delayed gratification”.

Delayed gratification is the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward that is usually greater. It’s about being patient and making choices that might be harder now but will lead to better outcomes in the future.
